The 2010 Christian Legal Intervention Academy
     
Hosted by Faith and Freedom Alliance 

The fifth legal intervention academy was held starting on the evening of Thursday June 3rd through Saturday June 5th at St. Michael's College and the Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.

This event was offered free of charge. Our objective is that the conference attendees provide 100-200 hours of pro bono legal work in the areas of pro family, pro life and religious and conscientious freedom over the course of the next 3 years.

The conference fea­tured some of the nation's top legal experts instructing on Canadian constitutional matters, religious freedom, and various Charter issues. 

Our keynote speaker was William Gairdner, author of The Trouble With Canada and other important books and articles concerning the country and its freedoms.

Friday June 4th at St. Michael’s College:

Philip Horgan
- Toronto Lawyer - President of the Catholic Civil Rights League on interventions, applicable law, and the importance of ensuring a fair hearing for religious and conscientious voices in the public sphere.

  • Don Hutchinson – Vice President and General Counsel, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada on interventions and practical issues, coalitions and clients.
  • Scott Kennedy - Lawyer at Monk Goodwin LLP, Winnipeg; Chair of the Faith and Freedom Alliance on human rights proceedings and practice issues.
  • Peter Stockland - Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Policy Renewal, formerly holding senior editorial/management positions with Readers' Digest, Montreal Gazette and the Calgary Herald. He spoke on Media issues.

On Friday evening June 4th, we hosted a dinner with our keynote speaker, William Gairdner, at Bistro 990 across the street from the Sutton Place hotel.

Saturday June 5th at St. Michael’s College:

  • Kevin Boonstra - Partner, Kuhn and Company, Abbotsford, British Columbia on Section 2 (a) of the Charter- freedom of conscience and religion.
  • Merv White - Partner, Carters Professional Corporation, Orangeville on human rights frameworks, an overview.
  • Gwen Landolt - Lawyer, National Vice president, REAL Women of Canada on interventions and future opportunities.
  • John Carpay - Lawyer, Executive Director of the Canadian Constitution Foundation on Section 2 (b) of the Charter- freedom of expression.
  • Sean Murphy - Administrator, Protection of Conscience Project in B.C. on the exercise of conscience and health care.
  • Terry Carter- Partner, Carters Professional Corporation, Orangeville on corporate structure and human rights.
